A recent report by the Renewable Energy Association concludes that the UK is in danger of missing targets for decarbonisation without immediately increasing the flexibility of the grid. An assessment of the UK's energy market readiness to transition to net zero compared to 11 European countries found that we are well behind others in making the necessary changes to increase grid flexibility.
Unless urgent action is implemented progress to net zero will be slowed as fossil fuel generators will be continued to be used when demand outstrips supply, and will be paid to turn off when supply is greater than demand.
The report provides a series of recommendations, with the full document available to read here.
